Let’s be honest. How often were you told in college about the importance of getting involved in extracurricular activities outside of your normal school schedule? I definitely did! Throughout my college career, many of my professors encouraged me to get involved in a student organization before graduation.
But why?
Getting involved can potentially provide you with A LOT of benefits going forward. Which is why I decided to join AMA (American Marketing Association) at Fresno State back in 2016 and have been a part of the organization since.
So, why IS it important? Well, I’m here to tell you. Here are 5 reasons why I think getting involved can be beneficial in your career:
Networking Opportunities
When you’re a part of an organization, you are constantly being invited to networking events and exposed to many companies in your field. Taking advantage of every meeting or event is an opportunity to network with other students and professionals. You never know who you’ll meet or run into. Many of these people may have already been in your shoes or are probably following down your same path. You can learn a lot from what they have experienced.
Build Strong Communications Skills
As a business marketing student, it was especially important for me to develop strong communication skills when speaking to clients. Many business organizations, like AMA can help their members build your communication skills by providing seminars, conferences and webinars hosted by professionals in the field. This way, students are able to learn hands-on from the professionals who are practicing the same skills.
Resume Builder
Many students get involved so they have something to add to their resume. No judgement! Several students do not get the opportunity to work while attending college; therefore, getting involved with a club and/or organization can help fill those spaces and provide plenty of relevant work experience. Plus, it’s the perfect conversation starter to any future interview.
Great Way to Meet New People
Not only do you get a chance to meet new professionals, but you make friends along the way. The best part of getting involved in an organization at school is that most (if not all) of the students in the organization are in the same major as you and may share the same interests as you do. What better way to meet new people?
Allows You to Find Your Strengths
Believe it or not, joining an organization can really help you find your strengths. You’d be surprised to see all of the amazing skills you can build by interacting with other students and in group events. It offers a unique learning experience that you might not get inside of a classroom.
Sure enough, my professors were right. Back in 2016, I ran as a board of director and was the VP of Communications position, which worked in my favor. As VP of communications, I was able to schedule and inform our members of upcoming meetings by regularly sending mass emails, creating flyers and weekly newsletters.
I loved it so much that I ran for President for my senior year. And boy, has it been an adventure. Joining AMA has definitely been an AMAzing and eye-opening adventure. It has really helped me expand my network and build great experience.
