Snapchat 101: How to Utilize a Snapchat Geofilter for Your Business

Ever heard of a Snapchat geofilter? Well if you haven’t, then keep on reading! And if you have, then let us show you how it can help your business reach thousands of people and stay within your budget.

Snapchat is a mobile app that lets a user send a photo or video to someone and it disappears in 10 seconds or less. Or instead of just sending it to individual people, the photo/video can stay up for 24 hours if the user adds it to their Snapchat story for all their friends to see. To make the photos and videos more fun, Snapchat has a variety of fun filters for users to chose from.

Snapchat Filter Example

In addition to these regular filters, Snapchat also has geofilters, which they describe as “creative overlays that capture where you are or what you’re up to in a Snap!”

Types of Geofilters

Snapchat has three categories of geofilters: community, personal and business.

  • Community: Used for cities, neighborhoods, schools, landmarks, etc. When you are in a city and on Snapchat, you will see a filter that says the city name so then you can use that filter to snap a pic and show everyone where you are having fun.
  • Personal: Used for birthdays, weddings, parties, gifts, holidays, etc. Personal filters are popular for weddings because guests enjoy snapping their memories with a personalized wedding filter.
  • Business: Used for stores, events, brands, restaurants, etc. This can be as big as a brand having a national geofilter throughout the U.S. on a specific day to promote itself or as simple as a store having a filter at its building.

How to Use a Geofilter for Your Business Event

Think about your next big event. Take it to the next level by making a geofilter. It’s an inexpensive way to reach your audience. On average, Snapchat charges about $5 per 20,000 square feet, and the area for a geofilter must be between 20,000 and 5 million square feet.

For the JP parties, we have been purchasing Snapchat filters for our building to be up during the party time, and it only costs about $7! Our employees and guests were able to use the JP branded Snapchat filter to show their friends all the fun they were having.

We recently had great success with a larger event geofilter. The radio station 106.7 KJUG Country hosts Jugfest, a free one-day country music festival. This type of event is the perfect opportunity for a Snapchat geofilter because people love snapping photos and videos at concerts!

Located at Mooney Park in Visalia, we designed a branded filter that covered the entire park for eight hours. Best part? It only cost about $300! While that may be a higher budget than what you had in mind, when we analyzed the results and usage of the filter it provided a great return on investment.

Jugfest 2017 Snapchat Filter

The Results

Thousands were dancing along to country music and of course sharing their experience on social media during that hot Saturday afternoon. While on the Snapchat app, the Jugfest branded filter was used 1,600 times. From those 1,600 snaps, the Jugfest filter got 72,00 impressions! Those impressions came from friends of the people at Jugfest who saw their snaps.

It only cost $300 to have the filter up that day and because it received so many impressions, the cost per thousand impressions was only $4! This branded filter was able to be seen by thousands of people and spread awareness of the event and the radio station. We know our audience is on Snapchat, and being able to build our brand awareness is awesome.

Here at JP, we LOVE Snapchat filters. Check out the gallery to see some of the lovely faces of JP.
