Type Tuesday: The Letter U

This is a continuation of the series of designs based on the alphabet from our Creative team. Each post will include their designs and a peek into their process. Here’s a look inside Bryan’s process. Enjoy!

For the letter, “U,” I decided to illustrate a character on my iPad Pro. I’ve been drawing a lot of strange quirky monsters lately and felt the letter, “U,” would be a nice base.

Sketch

First, I grabbed a piece of scrap paper to start thumbnail sketches. I really can’t stand to draw in sketchbooks. I’d rather just sketch on random pieces of paper I find lying around. After a few thumbnails, I selected the image below to photograph and import into my iPad Pro.

Outline

I use the app Procreate for digital illustrations. Once the sketch is imported, I begin to outline the rough to add detail and clean up my line work. The brushes I used for this illustration were the soft pastel and water brush.

Painting

My painting process is to lay in flat color first then add shadows and highlights, paying attention to form and the light source. Procreate is an amazing program that can produce professional quality images.

The Final Product

Sorry Photoshop, but Procreate is quicker and more stripped down. It just works better for raster illustration. Cheers!
