Type Tuesday: The Letter S

This is a continuation of the series of designs based on the alphabet from our Creative team. Each post will include their designs and a peek into their process. Here’s a look inside Brandon’s process. Enjoy!

I tossed around a few ideas before I figured out what I wanted to do with this letter. I’ve been wanting to do something that requires me to use a camera. A few ideas were to either take some pictures of S letters around town or to do something with slow exposure and capture light in the shape of an S.

I decided to go with the process of creating anamorphic illusions with the letter S. You may have seen some examples of this on sidewalk with chalk or paint which when viewed at a certain perspective the art would look 3D or real.

The first step was looking up how to create this effect. It’s off two grids: where you place your object on the black grid and change the perspective of the black grid to line up the blue grid.

It took me a few trial runs before I was able to get the effect right on camera. Once I got its shape down, I started creating my own S letter.

During the process, I knew adding 3D edges to the letter would add to the effect on camera. Playing off the S, I decided to add a stone texture to the letter. Below is what the S looks like on screen and when you print it out.

And here it is when you take a photo of it at the right perspective.
