(Social Media) Relationships Are Hard Work

Love is in the air! So this week, it’s all about relationships. And relationships are not easy.

Does he think you’re cool? Does she love your cooking? Have you had a few fights in the past?

These are just a few of the millions of questions that businesses worry about on a daily basis. Oh, you thought I was talking about your Valentine’s date? Well… that too.

Don’t worry, a few of our favorite romantic movies are here to help you figure it out. Building relationships on social media is a lot like dating. It’s a huge time commitment, and if you’re not ready to take the plunge, you won’t make a lasting impression. How will you know if they really love you? You’ve got to talk to them and we’ve got a few pointers to help beginners.

What’s your type?
You’ve got to figure out who your target is. Are you a B2B company looking to recruit? Are you a farm-to-fork local restaurant wanting to find foodies? Figure out who you are and who you want to woo.

Where do you meet people?
Now that you’ve figured out your target – it’s time to do a little research. Those foodies you’re looking for are probably posting artistic food pics on Instagram. There are a million articles online to show you where your target is having conversations online. Need help? Shoot me an email!

What do you talk about?
In any dating situation, it’s normal to talk about yourself. After all, they want to get to know you. But would you like it if someone just spewed out fact after fact about themselves, not letting you speak, and not talking about anything else for the entire date? I’m betting you aren’t going on a second date. Find out what you have in common and spark conversations around your common interests. It’ll be a MUCH more interesting interaction for everyone involved.

When’s the next date?
The more you spark engagement between you and your target, the more they will be invested in your brand. Which means you can’t rely on one good date to make someone love you, just like you can’t rely on one great tweet to build brand awareness.

And one last reminder from the king of romantic movies, Nicholas Sparks:

“It’s not gonna be easy. It’s going to be really hard; we’re gonna have to work at this everyday, but I want to do that because I want you.”  – The Notebook

Tweeting once? Seems pretty easy. Keeping the conversation going almost every day for a year, or two, or more? It’s not. But is it worth it? Absolutely!

Good luck winning over your customers and Happy (Almost) Valentine’s Day!
